Daily Detox: Drink Warm Lemon Water With Turmeric
For several years now, I’ve been starting the day with warm lemon water because of its long list of health benefits. Lemon water, among many other things, detoxifies the body by giving the digestive system a kick in the morning.
Truth be told, though I need this daily detox after a summer full of travel, I’ve been looking for a way to jazz up the morning ritual and discovered that adding turmeric to lemon water not only offers a different taste, but it adds a number of other health benefits, too.
Health Benefits Of Turmeric
Turmeric is not only what makes mustard and curries yellow, but it’s an incredibly powerful nutritional supplement.
The Indian spice has chemical compounds called curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the most beneficial. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent (helpful for arthritis among many other conditions) and an antioxidant. It also helps the body to absorb other antioxidants.
Curcumin has also been linked to delaying or reversing brain diseases in rats and improves the ability of the lining of the blood vessels to function properly or endothelial function, therefore, it’s been thought to reverse cardiovascular disease.
Curcumin has been shown to benefit cancer patients as it can inhibit the proliferation and survival of almost all types of tumor cells.
It helps fight depression and many other health conditions.
I figure that it can’t hurt to add a bit of turmeric to my lemon water in the morning. Here’s how you can do it.
Warm Lemon Water with Turmeric Recipe:
- 1/2 of a lemon
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp of turmeric
- warm water
- a dab of honey (optional)
- Squeeze 1/2 of a lemon into a mug.
- Add the turmeric.
- Add warm water.
- Stir well.
- Add honey to taste, if desired.
- Keep spoon in the cup as turmeric will fall to the bottom so the drink will need to be mixed again.
What Does Turmeric In Lemon Water Taste Like?
Turmeric removes the sour taste of lemon and adds sort of a peppery flavor that takes some getting used to, truth be told. I might start off with a low dose and build up. The other reason for this is to see what sort of an impact it has on your digestive system.
There is a complicated reason for this but black pepper has a compound that helps helps the body absorb nutrients like curcumin. Some people munch a few peppercorns with this morning detox. Some experts say that if you do a good job of incorporating black pepper into your diet that this step isn’t necessary. I twist my grinder a few times over my drink because I don’t eat a lot of black pepper normally.
Always ask your doctor before starting a new health regimen anyway. I’d love to hear feedback from people who are drinking this!
